Dental implants are today's most permanent and functional solution for missing teeth. Artificial tooth roots made of titanium are placed in the jawbone and the osseointegration (fusion with bone) process is completed; then a porcelain or zirconia crown is placed on top. Neighboring teeth are not touched, resorption of the jawbone is prevented and natural chewing function is regained. Implant treatment, which can be applied across a wide spectrum from single tooth loss to complete edentulism, is performed at Sevgi Savaş Dental Clinic with modern technology and personalized planning.

What is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a titanium artificial tooth root surgically placed in the jawbone in the area where tooth loss has occurred. Titanium is a biocompatible metal that is not recognized by the body as a foreign object; therefore it permanently fuses with bone tissue. This fusion process is called osseointegration and generally takes 2–4 months.

The implant system consists of three main components: the titanium screw placed in the jawbone (implant body), the piece that provides the connection with the superstructure (abutment) and the visible crown (porcelain or zirconia). Together, they perfectly mimic the root-crown relationship of a natural tooth.

Situations Where Implants Stand Out Single tooth loss · Loss of multiple consecutive teeth · Complete edentulism (All on Four / All on Six) · Those who want to secure removable dentures · Those who do not want to cut neighboring teeth for a bridge
Key Advantages of Implants Closest appearance and feel to a natural tooth · Does not require intervention on neighboring teeth · Prevents jawbone resorption · 95–98% long-term success rate · Potential for lifelong use

Sutureless Implant (Flapless Surgery)

In traditional implant surgery, the gum is incised and retracted, the implant is placed, and then sutures are applied. With the sutureless (flapless) implant method, these incisions are no longer needed thanks to a computer-assisted surgical guide (surgical template). The implant is placed directly into the appropriate area with millimeter precision without cutting the gum.

Sutureless implant procedures are performed at our Ankara İncek clinic using computer-assisted 3D planning and surgical guides.

Shorter Operation

Since gum incision and suturing are eliminated, the operation time is noticeably shortened.

Faster Recovery

Surgical trauma is minimized; the risk of swelling, pain and bleeding is reduced. Return to daily life is faster.

Millimeter Precision

The angle and depth of the implant are predetermined with 3D computer planning; the human factor is minimized.

Patient Comfort

Post-procedure comfort is much higher compared to classic surgery; the patient can return to normal activities the same day.

Immediate Implant (Same-Day Implant)

An immediate implant is a procedure in which the implant is placed in the same session as the tooth extraction. While in the traditional approach the implant is placed 2–3 months after extraction by waiting for bone healing; in suitable cases these two procedures can be combined in a single session.

It is particularly preferred in the front tooth region for both a quick aesthetic result and to avoid a prolonged treatment process. A temporary aesthetic crown can also be placed on the same day.

Advantages of Immediate Implant Significantly shortens the total treatment period · Prevents bone loss and gum recession · Temporary aesthetic crown can be applied the same day · Fewer surgical sessions, less discomfort
Who Is Suitable for Immediate Implant? Patients with sufficient bone quality and volume · Extraction sites without acute infection · Especially front tooth region cases · Suitability is determined by clinical and radiological examination
Important NoteImmediate implant is not suitable for every case. The decision is made after evaluating bone density, the infection status of the extraction site and implant stability. Only a physician who performs a clinical and radiological examination can make this decision.

All on Four and All on Six – Complete Edentulism Solutions

For patients with complete edentulism, completing all teeth one by one with implants is both costly and requires a long process. All on Four and All on Six concepts are modern solutions that allow a fixed full arch prosthesis to be made on a minimum number of implants.

All on Four provides a great advantage especially for patients who do not have sufficient bone in the posterior region of the upper jaw, as the angled implant placement can eliminate the need for sinus lifting. All on Six, on the other hand, is a stronger long-term option where the prosthesis is supported by more implant points.

Bone Graft and Ridge Expansion

For an implant to be placed, the jawbone must have sufficient volume and density. In areas where bone loss has occurred due to prolonged tooth loss, periodontal disease or trauma, bone augmentation may be required prior to implant placement.

Types of Bone Graft Autogenous graft: Bone taken from the patient's own body; the highest biocompatibility option.

Allograft: Tissue obtained from a human bone bank; safe and functional.

Xenograft: Animal-derived (usually bovine) bone powder; widely used.

Synthetic graft: Laboratory-produced biocompatible materials.
Ridge Expansion In patients with a thin jawbone, sufficient volume for implant placement is created by slowly expanding the bone without cutting it. Particularly preferred in the anterior lower jaw region. Combination with graft may be required. Post-healing implant success rates are equivalent to normal cases.

Bone graft surgery and implant placement can be performed in the same session or in separate sessions. The decision is made based on the size of the defect, the graft material and the patient's general health status. Graft healing generally takes 4–6 months.

Sinus Lifting (Sinus Augmentation)

The maxillary sinus cavities are located in the posterior region of the upper jaw. With prolonged tooth loss in this area, the sinus expands and the bone resorbs; there may not be enough bone height left to place an implant.

With sinus lifting surgery, the sinus floor is elevated and bone graft is placed in the created space, providing sufficient bone volume for the implant. Two techniques can be applied:

  • Lateral (open) approach: In cases of serious bone insufficiency, a surgical window is opened and graft is placed. Bone healing takes 6–9 months; the implant is then placed in a separate session.
  • Crestal (closed / osteotome) approach: In cases with less bone loss, the sinus floor is gently elevated through the implant placement channel. The implant can be placed in the same session.

Sinus lifting is a safe procedure with high long-term success rates that resolves cases in the posterior upper jaw that appear unsuitable for implant placement.

Dental Implant Treatment Process

1
Clinical and Radiological Assessment

Bone volume, quality and anatomical structures are examined through oral examination, 3D tomography (CBCT) and general health assessment. Which implant method is appropriate is determined at this stage.

2
Preparation (If Required)

Preparatory procedures such as active gum disease treatment, bone graft or sinus lifting are planned and completed when necessary.

3
Surgical Placement

The titanium implant is placed in the jawbone under local anesthesia (with the sutureless method if a surgical guide is used). The operation for a single implant takes 15–30 minutes.

4
Osseointegration (Fusion with Bone)

An average of 2–3 months is waited for the lower jaw, and 3–4 months for the upper jaw. During this period a temporary prosthesis can be fitted; patients continue their normal diet.

5
Abutment Placement and Impression

After the implant's complete fusion with bone is confirmed, the abutment is connected. An impression is taken for the crown and sent to the laboratory.

6
Final Crown Placement

The porcelain or zirconia crown is placed in the mouth along with an occlusion (bite) check. Treatment is complete.

Implant Care and Longevity

Dental implants require regular care just like natural teeth. The implant body is immune to caries; however, when the surrounding gum tissue is neglected, peri-implantitis (infection around the implant) can develop. If not treated in time, this can lead to bone loss and implant failure.

Daily Care Recommendations Brushing at least twice a day with a soft brush · Use of interdental brush or implant floss · Antiseptic mouthwash (as recommended by dentist) · Use of a protective splint if teeth grinding is present at night
Professional Check-up At least 1–2 dental check-ups per year · Professional implant cleaning (with special instruments) · Bone level monitoring (periodic X-ray) · Assessment of crown and abutment integrity

With regular care and dental check-ups, dental implants can be used trouble-free for 20 years or more. Some cases are monitored for a lifetime.

Smoking and ImplantsResearch shows that smoking negatively affects the osseointegration process and increases the risk of failure by 2–3 times. If you smoke, following your dentist's recommendations before and after treatment is of critical importance for maintaining success rates.

Who Can Have Implants?

The basic prerequisite for dental implant treatment is that bone development must be complete (generally 18 years of age and older). There is no upper age limit; in many patients aged 70–80, if the bone structure and general health are suitable, implants can be successfully placed.

ConditionCan Implant Be Placed?Description
Sufficient bone volume✅ YesStandard implant protocol
Insufficient bone✅ With bone graftCan be applied after preparation
Controlled diabetes⚠️ Assessment requiredMay be possible with HbA1c control
Controlled hypertension✅ Generally yesWith cardiology approval
Active gum disease❌ Treatment firstCan be applied after periodontal treatment
Chemotherapy / radiotherapy⚠️ Specialist assessmentMay be possible after treatment is completed
Smoking⚠️ Increased riskApplicable; higher risk of failure

The conditions of each case differ from one another. Only clinical examination and 3D tomography assessment can definitively determine implant suitability.

Advantages of Dental Implants

🦷Natural Appearance and Feel

Porcelain or zirconia crown offers an indistinguishable appearance from a natural tooth and chewing comfort.

🛡️Prevents Bone Resorption

The jawbone resorbs in empty areas; the implant stops this process by providing the necessary stimulation to the bone.

🔗Does Not Touch Neighboring Teeth

Unlike a bridge prosthesis, adjacent healthy teeth are not cut and are not damaged.

Lifelong Durability

Potential for 20 years or more of use with regular care; the most economically permanent long-term solution.

😊Confidence and Quality of Life

With the correction of missing teeth, the quality of speech, chewing and social life directly improves.

🎯95–98% Success Rate

Extremely high success rate with correct patient selection, quality materials and experienced application.

Dental Implant – Frequently Asked Questions

What is a dental implant and how does it work?
A dental implant is an artificial tooth root made of titanium. After being surgically placed in the jawbone, a process called osseointegration — fusion with the bone — begins. This process generally takes 2–4 months. Once fusion is complete, a porcelain or zirconia crown is placed on top to achieve the closest appearance and function to a natural tooth.
Is implant placement painful?
Since the implant operation is performed under local anesthesia, no pain is felt during the procedure. After the anesthesia wears off, mild pain and swelling may occur for a few days; this is easily controlled with prescribed painkillers. Many patients report that implant pain is no different from a normal tooth extraction.
How many sessions does implant treatment take?
The standard protocol can take a total of 3–6 months, including surgical placement, the osseointegration waiting period (2–4 months) and the crown stage. This period can be shortened with sutureless or immediate implant methods. In cases requiring bone graft or sinus lifting, the process may take longer. A personalized time plan is made at our clinic during the initial assessment.
What is the difference between sutureless implant and classic implant?
In the classic method, the gum is incised and retracted, and sutures are applied at the end of the operation. In the sutureless (flapless) method, the implant is placed directly into the bone without cutting the gum, thanks to a computer-assisted surgical guide. With this method, healing time is shortened, the risk of swelling and pain is reduced, and the patient can return to normal life the same day.
What is All on Four, and how many implants are needed for a full set of teeth?
All on Four is a method that allows a fixed prosthesis for the entire arch to be made by placing only 4 implants in each jaw in cases of complete edentulism. In All on Six, 6 implants are used to achieve a more balanced chewing force distribution. In both methods, a temporary prosthesis can be fitted the same day. Which one is appropriate is determined by bone volume and overall assessment.
Is a bone graft always necessary before an implant?
No. A bone graft is only required for patients who do not have sufficient bone volume and quality for the implant. In patients where timely tooth loss management has been carried out and bone preservation has been ensured, implants can be placed without a graft. Whether a bone graft is needed can only be revealed by a detailed assessment using 3D tomography (CBCT).
How long do implants last?
With regular oral care and annual dental check-ups, dental implants can be used trouble-free for 20 years or more. The titanium body is practically durable for a lifetime; it is the superstructure (crown) component that may need replacement over time. Smoking, teeth clenching and insufficient oral hygiene are the main factors that negatively affect implant longevity.
Can people with chronic diseases (diabetes, hypertension) have implants?
Implants can be placed with controlled diabetes and hypertension; however, approval from the relevant specialist physician is required. In cases of uncontrolled systemic diseases, or during chemotherapy or radiotherapy, implant treatment should be deferred. Each case is evaluated individually; consultation with relevant specialists is conducted when necessary.
What is an immediate implant — can a crown be placed the same day?
An immediate implant is a method that combines tooth extraction and implant placement in the same session. If suitable bone structure is present, a temporary aesthetic crown can also be fitted the same day; however, this temporary crown must be protected from chewing forces. The permanent crown is placed after osseointegration is complete. The applicability of the method is determined by clinical and radiological assessment.
What is sinus lifting — can't implants be placed in the posterior upper jaw?
Sinus lifting is a procedure in which the sinus floor is elevated and graft is placed in cases with insufficient bone height in the posterior upper jaw region. Thanks to this procedure, implants can be successfully placed in areas that previously appeared unsuitable for implant placement. Long-term success rates are comparable to standard implant cases.
How should implants be cared for?
Implants should be brushed at least twice a day like natural teeth, and cleaned with an interdental brush or implant floss. Professional implant cleaning and check-up examinations are recommended 1–2 times per year. If teeth clenching is present, a protective night guard should be used. Since smoking increases the risk of peri-implantitis, quitting is recommended if possible.
